Meet Joan Garbow, LCSW, CCM and ALCA New England Chapter Co-President

February 28, 2023   |   Board/Committee Member Spotlight

Where do you practice, Joan?

I am in the southwestern corner of Connecticut: Fairfield County.  I am a solo practitioner with some per diem staff when needed.

How long have you been an ALCA member?

I have been a member since 2007.  I joined ALCA as soon as I started my private practice. I feel it is important to have professional relationships and colleagues who do what you do. I came from a background as a medical social worker and an inpatient rehabilitation case manager where I was part of an interdisciplinary team. So, when I started working as a solo practitioner it was important to me to create a team of other professionals which I was collaborating with. Through ALCA, I have met wonderful colleagues who are also great friends.

Tell us about your experience as a Board/Committee member?

I joined the Board in 2017 and was Membership co-chair with Carolyn Brennan-Alley from Maine.  We worked on a process to welcome new members to the Chapter, and this led to a very positive culture of inclusiveness.  In 2018, I was awarded “Outstanding Chapter Member”, and from 2019-2021, I was Co-Vice-President with Carolyn.  I am honored to be Co-President, currently.

What do you do in your free time?

I love hiking, yoga, snowshoeing, planning travel with my family, and knitting.
