Meet Kathryn McGuinness, BSN, RN, CMC and ALCA New England Chapter Member Since 2016
August 4, 2026 | Special Spotlight
What is your company, Kathryn?
My company is KMc Care Management.
Where do you practice?
I serve older adults and their families throughout Greater Boston and the surrounding communities, helping them navigate the challenges that often come with aging, illness, and complex healthcare needs.
How led you to the profession of Aging Life Care?
I think my path to Aging Life Care really started long before I became a nurse.
Both of my grandmothers dreamed of remaining in their own homes for the rest of their lives, and our family was fortunate enough to help them achieve that dream. Looking back, I realize how much easier it would have been if we’d had an Aging Life Care Manager to guide us, There were plenty of times when we felt overwhelmed and didn’t know what we didn’t know. Having someone who had been through it before, knew the healthcare system, and could point us in the right direction would have been invaluable.
We struggled to find reliable help, and my mom ended up needing to move to Florida to care for her mother. She missed both my sister’s and my pregnancies, and the births of three of her grandchildren. I know she wanted to be there with and for her mother but was also incredibly sad to move away from her friends, job, 6 children, and miss the first couple of years with three new grandbabies.
When I discovered Aging Life Care, I knew I’d found exactly where I belonged. I remember thinking, This is what we needed for my grandmothers, and it’s exactly what I want to provide for other families today.
People sometimes assume I believe everyone should stay at home, but that’s not the case at all. My mom made a completely different choice and moved to assisted living in 2019. She loves it. Her social life is better than mine, she’s made wonderful friends, and she’s thriving. Those experiences have taught me there is no one-size-fits-all answer. My job is to help older adults and their families understand their options and find the solution that’s right for them.
Do you have an area of expertise or specialty?
I specialize in working with older adults with complex medical needs, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and other chronic illnesses. I love helping families solve problems, coordinate care, advocate during hospitalizations, and make what often feels overwhelming a little more manageable. My goal is to help older adults live as safely, independently, and joyfully as possible while giving their families peace of mind.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
When I’m not working, you’ll usually find me outside. I love mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing, and spending time in the White Mountains. I also enjoy traveling, reading, cooking, dancing, live music, spending time by the ocean, and making memories with friends and family. I still get excited about sunrises, sunsets, and shooting stars.
Anything else about you that you would like to mention?
One of the greatest gifts of this profession has been becoming involved with the Aging Life Care Association and attending our national conferences. I look forward to the learning, collaboration, and friendships all year long. The generosity with which members share their knowledge, support one another, and genuinely want to help each other succeed is something I deeply appreciate. Over the years, many of those colleagues have become trusted friends, and I’m grateful to be part of such a remarkable community.
As a member of the New England Chapter’s Executive Board, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the most dedicated and knowledgeable professionals in the field. The number of members willing to share their experience and offer guidance is truly special. Knowing I can lean on trusted colleagues when a family faces an especially complex situation ultimately means better care for the people we serve.
The things I love most about this profession is getting to know my clients and their families. It’s an honor to help people through some of life’s biggest transitions, and I feel incredibly lucky to do work that is both meaningful and rewarding. If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that growing older doesn’t have to mean giving up the life you love, especially when you have the right support and a good plan.
